Break From Studying and Mating Octopus
Posted On 05/27/2008 15:59:16

May 24th I took a break from studying and went diving with Fernando and his family (from San Jose, Costa Rica) and Tim and Chandra (from England).  There were lots of white-tip reef sharks at Argentina Point (I counted at least 10).  They were hanging out from 30ft to 80ft, which allowed our open water student, Perry, get to see sharks on her very first dive.  We found a yellow sea horse and a juvenile high hat plus lots of octopus.   We watched two octopus fighting with each other.  That was really cool, I think they were planning to mate and we startled them.  They were flicking their tentacles at each other and then one swam away and camouflaged itself to look like the sandy bottom while the other one tried really hard to look like the rock.  For our second dive we choose Tortuga (Key Largo) and Kike found a really nice red frog fish.  No better way to refresh you brain than a great day of diving.

Mothers Day, What a Day!
Posted On 05/12/2008 13:51:30

Yesterday I went diving with my two daughters Kelley and Karie; what a day.  We dove Surpresa in the Gulf of Papagayo, Costa Rica.  Visibility was 70ft and the water was 83 degrees.  Eels were everywhere and lots of octopus poking their heads out.  We found a turtle munching on some algae, must have been realy good stuff because we saw him go up for air and while we did our saftey stop we saw him diving back down for more.  Pura Vida

WOW! What kind of ray was that?
Posted On 05/07/2008 10:15:06

I went diving yesterday with a couple of customers and wow the water was soo nice.  Warm, clear and full of fish.  We found two baby white-tip reef sharks sleeping under a rock at Virador and down at 70 feet there were thousands of half moon jelly fish.  There were so many that I was almost hypnotised, the song from the Beatles kept going through my head (Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds).  We found a really nice octopus free swimming, he was changing colors and trying to change his shape to look more like a rock.  Very Cool.  After we passed the jelly fish there were six big pregnant white-tip reef sharks napping in the sand.

Virador was so great for the first dive we decided to dive the second dive hoping for a repeat.  We were not let down, it was great but with an added surprise.  We came across a ray that I have never seen before and I have 1000s of dive here.  We were fixen to make the safety stop when I saw something stirring up the sand, and the end of a rays tail sticking out of the cloud. We all watched and waited and finally we were able to see the ray.  This ray was about 4ft in diameter and was a grayish color with a thick tail that is very thick at the base.????

Southern Sting Rays & Half Moon Jellies Diving Safaris Costa Rica
Posted On 05/05/2008 15:49:50

I dove with my daughter Kelley and some of her friends from Utila on her birthday and the water was pretty chilly (68F), but we did not notice it so much because of the parade of southern sting rays at Argentina Point.  At 80ft the jelly fish were everywhere (they are not the stinging kind), you could feel them as they bumped up against your face, and sometimes you had to use your hand to move them out of your path.  Very cool dive, no pun intended.

Katherine from Oceans Unlimited in Quepos, Costa Rica and her friend Georgia went for a dive with us and she had a turtle try to steel a little air while she was diving at Monkey Head last week.  That was very strange, always surprising.

Glow in the dark dolphins and baby whale sharks
Posted On 04/29/2008 15:28:23

Just got back from our first overnight surf and dive trip with Costa Rica Surf Charters.  What a trip!  After watching the sunset and feasting on filet mignon and fresh ahi tuna we began our crossing to Witches Rock.  On the way a pod of dolphin joined in.  There was so much luminescent in the water that the dolphin actually glowed.  They would race off looking like a comet shooting through the water.  It was one of the most beautiful experiences I have ever had. The next morning we watched the sun rise and on the way to the surf site we came across a baby whale shark.  It was very curious about us and stayed within inches of our bodies as we snorkeled.  WOW. I love my job!
