Well folks - here I am! I have purchased the courses; setup the training; have the pool...
I really want to tell you that all of the HYPE by my CD was just that - HYPE. After 26 years of diving and training all I have found are: No help from my organization; A lack of support from the local shops.
Make no mistake - I am successful. I actually employ folks in the dive industry. I have recently discovered that I am one of the FEW who employ and utilize DM's. Yes, they have to learn sometime - so I was able to put them to work and they get paid.
What makes this really unusual is they rarely have a free moment. I am disgruntled with the training agency, because they do not promote the independent guy like myself. Well I will be heard now. I am sure I will hear from some MOLE in the organization who will disagree - but I don't care. I know what I have experienced.
The training agencies do not support anyone who is Independent. It is as though we are needed, but only if we are willing to sign on in a shop. It is bull. I finally figured out a business plan that seems to be working and paying people. WOW! What a concept. To me, training agencies are nothing more than the ultimate Paper pusher. As long as you purchase their over priced paper, you are a good joe.
Figure out how to cut them out - like the cancer they are- and man do the lawyers come knocking. Well the only saving grace the big boys have are 1 or 2 individuals.
If any of you are looking to become pro- go with a shop! Take the measly pay - after all something is better than nothing. Don't do it my way. The pay is poor, but the satisfaction is awesome.
The last thing I learned - just recently it was truly revealed - it is amazing how many friends you have that are broke... with new gear and toys. I used to get angry at the costs for the classes. I tried to "help" all of the poor...
I was screwed by those closest... doesn't that beat all?! I am amazed. Well my wife put it in perspective. I have a business, and new friends are on the horizon.
I can employ people and there are 12000 individuals every year who are discovering diving, thanks to me.
I can't book your trip any more, I can only teach you and let you know where I am going. Good Luck to all.
